State parksVeteran camping discountVeterans receive $6 off each eligible campsite or camper-cabin night. Selected seasonal entrance fees also have veteran discounts.Show proof of veteran service at check-in. EducationChildren of Wartime Veterans scholarshipA class-based scholarship provides up to eight academic semesters at participating North Carolina schools within eight years. Class I-B covers specified expenses for children of veterans receiving compensation for 100% wartime service-connected disability. The Fall 2026 portal is closed to new applicants.Applicant under 25, resident and domiciled in North Carolina, with qualifying wartime parent service and statutory family residency. Income taxMilitary retirement deductionEligible military retirement benefits included in federal adjusted gross income may be deducted from North Carolina income. VA disability compensation is not taxable income.Retirement after at least 20 years of service, or medical retirement under Chapter 61. Qualifying survivor benefits also have rules. EmploymentState hiring preferenceEligible veterans receive preference in state hiring, including 10 points when a numerical assessment is used and consideration of relevant military experience.Covered state positions and qualifications apply.
