Vehicle registrationOne-vehicle registration fee waiverQualifying disabled veterans receive one personal vehicle's annual registration without the specified registration fees, using a disabled-veteran or standard passenger plate under current law.Virginia's statutory disabled-veteran definition includes permanent total disability or specified limb loss or blindness, with required service-related certification. Hunting and fishingDisabled veteran lifetime licensesLifetime hunting and freshwater fishing licenses cost $100 each at 30–49%, $75 each at 50–69% and $50 each at 70% or higher. Service-connected permanent-total veterans receive these licenses free; their trapping license costs $15.Virginia residency and certified service-connected disability, with application and hunter-education documentation. State parksVeteran Disability PassportThe passport offers free eligible parking and boat-launch privileges and discounts on specified park rentals and recreation services.Documented 100% service-connected disability; residency is not required. EducationMilitary Survivors and Dependents Education ProgramDVS-certified spouses and children can receive tuition and mandatory-fee waivers for up to eight semesters at Virginia public institutions. Housing and meals are not included; stipend eligibility is separate.Children generally 16–29 or eligible spouses, statutory Virginia domicile or physical-presence pathways, and a qualifying service-related death, POW/MIA status, permanent-total disability or at least 90% permanent service-connected disability. Income taxMilitary benefits subtractionUp to $40,000 of eligible military retirement and qualifying survivor benefits may be subtracted for tax years 2025 and later. VA compensation already excluded from federal income is not subtracted a second time.Benefits must be included in federal taxable income and meet Virginia's benefit definitions. Thrift Savings Plan distributions do not qualify as military retired pay for this subtraction.Official program details
EmploymentCommonwealth hiring preferencePassing written examination grades increase 5% for eligible veterans or 10% with a VA-fixed service-connected rating. Qualified applicants receive preference and additional disabled-veteran consideration in other covered selection processes.Honorable discharge and more than 180 consecutive active-duty days, or a VA-fixed service-connected disability.
